Built between 1886 and 1894, Tower Bridge is considered a masterpiece of Victorian engineering because of its ingenious design, which allows river, road and foot traffic to cross the Thames – the Bridge’s iconic bascule system means that the road can be raised to allow ships to pass. As for pedestrians, architect Sir Horace Jones and civil engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry designed the Walkways running between the North and South towers of the bridge so that people could still cross the Bridge even when the bascules were lifted.
Spanning 61 metres and standing 42 metres above the River Thames, the Walkways offer unparalleled, 360-degree views of London’s skyline thanks to the installation of Glass Floors in 2014.
